The Rich Jerk
Have you heard about the Rich Jerk?
I'll give you a warning about him later, I wasn't even sure I should mention him.
He's an internet marketing millionaire who has developed a lot of tactics for creating income from web sites and affiliate programs. (He recently sold a web site of his on eBay for an amazing $369,000)
And like a lot of other "gurus" he just wrote an eBook about his methods.
That's where the similarities end.
Because the rich jerk's book talks about some very controversial tactics. Like "black hat" search engine cloaking. And questionable rebate tactics. Stuff I wouldn't personally use.
But...
He also reveals tips for Pay Per Click advertising that will work wonders in competitive keyword situations. He talks about how to structure "review" sites that promote ClickBank products for maximum profits.
He offers great advice for eBayers looking for quality drop shippers, and how to avoid scams.
I have to admit that I learned many tactics and ideas that I have never heard before in any of the seminars I have attended nor any of the eBooks and courses I have read.
He's got some great ideas on PPC arbitrage and using low-cost keywords and search engines to make money with AdSense.
He's also got some solid search engine optimization strategies to get any site ranked higher.
This is not a "comprehensive guide" type book. It is not for complete beginners who still need to learn the basics.
Consider it a "tactics resource", any one of which could pay back the cost of the book many times over. There is zero fluff in this book. Every page holds ideas that could help your sites do better, whether you have your own product or not.

And now here's the warning. The salesletter and the book are obnoxious. This guy is so full of himself and his success that it almost makes you want to find out who he is and cut him down a peg.
I don't know if this is part of his marketing schtick for the book or if he really is that way. (My guess is that it's the marketing because in a couple of emails to me, he came across as a normal, polite guy.)
Personally, I can separate the delivery style from the content because the content is that good.

The Rich Jerk is nor for everyone. In fact, it's appeal is limited to those who can get past the style and focus on the substance. But the fact is, there is a boatload of tactical knowledge in this book. I know it has already helped me.

MLM Lead Generation Via Newspaper Ads: The End Of An Era?

Recently I was discussing MLM lead generation with a coaching client of mine. He was lamenting the high cost of classified ads in regional and national newspapers. His cost per lead from USA Today was approaching the $40 per lead mark, and he was struggling with prospects scattered from coast to coast and every Podunk town in between. He had tried narrowing his ads to the main city papers in his state, and it was even worse.
He was seeing $300 ads not get a single phone call in the Business Opportunity Section of his big city paper. Anyone who has tried to build an MLM business for any length of time can relate. Lead flow is the lifeblood of the business. Ironically, I came into the industry via a small classified ad in my local city paper. In December 1990 I called of an ad in the Toronto Sun that said, "I'm 21, drive a new Corvette Convertible, own 5 homes, and make $15,000 a month. Call if you want I have. Serious enquiries only, don't waste my time."
I joined that cheeky monkey, and we ran that ad every single day for 6 months. In early 1991, we would never get less than 5 calls a day from that ad. I think our record was 23 calls in 1 day. 1 day! I enrolled over $30,000 in brand new volume in April 1991 from that ad alone. Eventually, others in the company started to rip off our ads, and flood the paper. The glory was over by August that year.
Today, the Toronto Sun doesn't have 1 single MLM ad in it. I checked the Biz Op section and there were 2 ads for starting your own carpet cleaning business and one for starting your own coffee truck. The medium has shifted.
If you are going to advertise, you need to be in front of your target market in the most cost-effective medium possible. In my opinion that is Google. You can now put your ads on Google Adwords as tightly targeted as a zip code. Let's say you want to create some leads in Las Vegas. You open an account in Google Adwords, pick your region, pick your keywords, write 2 ads, put in your visa number, and presto! You can have leads coming in within an hour. No waiting days for a newspaper. This is ultra-fast targeted MLM lead generation for the 21st century!
The true power is you can split-test your ads on the fly. You can constantly be tweaking headlines and ad copy. You can improve the pulling power of your ads every hour if you wanted to. The larger your keyword count, the more eyeballs will see your ad. If you want someone in Las Vegas who searches for "yeast infection herbal cure" you can put your ad right in front of his or her eyes. Nothing else is as powerful.
If you know what you are doing, you can eventually get 100 visitors to your landing web page for as little as $5.00. Even if your landing page is a super-tight screener, and only 5% fill out the form, that's still a cost per lead of a buck! If you ran an ad in any Las Vegas paper you couldn't get your cost per lead under 20 bucks, and forget about tweaking your ads on the fly.
Network marketers are notorious early adopters. Back in 1991 real estate agents, drug dealers and network marketers were the only ones with those giant brick cell phones. We were quick into fax on demand, video and audiotape prospecting, and of course we practically took over the web in 97. It's worth your time to teach yourself how to advertise on Google. There are a ton of great courses out there, discussion forums aplenty, and Google itself has a bunch of great tutorials. There is never any excuse to ever again have to buy an overpriced burned out lead from some broker.

Do You Have A Local MLM Lead Generation Strategy For Your Team?

I walked the 2 blocks in the drizzling rain this morning to get my favorite cup of coffee. No, not Starbucks. Tim Hortons. For those of you who aren't hockey fans (or Canadians), Tim Horton was a legendary hockey player who launched an even more legendary chain of coffee shops. It's secretly rumored that they put liquid nicotine in their coffee to get people hooked!
I don't know about that...I know that I get jittery, grumpy and twitchy if I don't get my Timmy fix every morning!
There is a town of 90,000 people in South West Ontario that has 3 Tim Hortons at one major intersection. The drive-throughs of all 3 are jammed every single morning. And it is at this location that a friend of mine does all her prospecting for her mlm business.
She gets up 30 minutes earlier than she did a year ago. She drives to the busy corner, parks, and goes car by car each morning as people sit waiting their turn to order coffee (does Starbucks have any drive throughs?). She taps on their glass, and hands them a prospecting card to promote her deal. She smiles and does 100 cars in under 20 minutes, then goes to her job. She has been doing this for 3 months, 5 days a week. Her consistency and persistence is amazing.
She gets all the leads she can handle, for under $2.70 a lead. All are local, have jobs, and are early morning commuters. She has tapped a gold mine!
The cool thing is she has sponsored 17 people frontline, and has nearly 40 in her group. And they all are working locally, and have a cookie cutter system for creating leads. They all use the same drop cards and flyers. In a year or two I predict she'll be able to leave her job at the car factory if she wants.
I stood in a snowbank every day in February 1988 handing out flyers because I wanted a better life. She does the same for the same reason. Most of our downlines won't do this. They have "too-cool-itis" or "too-lazy-itis" or "scarediosis-nervosa".
How often has a member told you, "I don't know anybody?" Do you have system to get them productive within 24 hours, and turn them into a lead generating machine?

A Few Thoughts On Motivation
Can I ask you a question?
Why did you get up this morning?
Seriously, think for a second. Most people just grunt and groan and say, "I have to get up for work."
But do you really?
We live in a free society. Technically you could lay in bed all day if you really wanted to. But why do we get up?
Fear of Loss is a big motivator.
We all fear losing our job, losing our income and being broke. We fear being hungry, losing our house, our car, and being bankrupt and destitute.
Those mental images are strong enough that we get up to the squeal of the electric rooster, bleary-eyed and still tired from the night before. Millions of people endure a horrible commute to work, a job they hate, and they do it day after day after day after day.
Fear of Loss is powerful.
Humans really only react in two directions. Away from pain and towards pleasure.
Away from pain is the stronger of the two in most people.
But moving towards pleasure can be extremely powerful if you learn to visualize the desired outcome, build new inner speech patterns and belief systems and master the art of subconscious programming.
I'll give you an example.
On a sunny summer day in July of 2000 I stood on a stage in front of over 6000 people to receive the highest award in my direct sales company. As I looked out over the crowd I smiled with confidence, pride and the most peculiar feeling of Deja Vu. Had I been here before?
Actually, thousands of times, but all in my subconscious. I knew the tuxedo I would be wearing, the shoes, the watch, everything. I knew how the crowd would roar, I had heard the thunderous applause a million times, and seen the blinding glare of the stage lights. I had rehearsed my speech a thousand times preparing for that special night.
My desire to move towards this picture in my mind was VERY powerful!
I manifested my reality to suit that inner picture.
Learning to do this effectively can make your life seem magical.

Network Marketers Secret New Weapon - The Blog

A friend and mentor of mine once told me, "David, your mess is your message!".
Huh?
From that lesson I wrote my best-selling book Beyond The Road To Gold - How I Went From Welfare To Millionaire Without Winning The Lottery. It was a tough book to write. A lot of personal hardships that I didn't particularly want to relive or expose for mass consumption. But that book has won me more praise, more recognition, and ultimately lead to more income than anything else I have ever published. It's estimated that there are over 200,000 copies of the physical and digital version of that book around the world today.
Having sat at the back of the meeting room, broke and hungry as well as been onstage, I can get some perspective. When I had nothing I always wanted to be the guy onstage. I thought they made the most money. It wasn't until I was on stage that I realized I wanted to be the guy at the back of the huge room with 1000 guests and downline and 5 of my sharpest big guns doing all the speaking....trainer of champions instead of the only champion.
People relate the most to misery, struggles and obstacles and they have a huge desire to learn the strategies and secrets to overcoming them. That's what I learned from "your mess is your message". Once I stopped being the untouchable superstar at the front of the room and revisited all the ugly mess that it took to reach that goal, I became relatable again.
The blog is the 21st century tool for you to do that. Think of it as an online diary. If you are bold, brave and courageous you can live your life out in the open. Thanks to the technology you can post articles, memos, pictures, thoughts and chronicle your life. A life worth living is a life worth recording.
Blogs are free. Google just bought Blogger. You can set up a blog at http://www.blogger.com/ in 5 minutes. Promote it to your prospects. Let them see you develop, struggle, and celebrate your victories. You will bond and reach more people that way. The more lives you touch, the more it will come back to you.

The Best Part of The Day

I had to check this article for typos. My beautiful wife just woke up, and wandered into my home office this morning in her pyjamas, sat in my lap and gave me the biggest hug. Our two cats danced around us on the floor, purring like fire trucks and meowing for her to feed them. But first, the hug.
Nothing can compare with working at home.
If you currently commute to a job, you have my sympathies. I hope you pick up one pearl or gold nugget in these pages that can set you free. If you have the lifestyle, cherish it my friend!
I sometimes feel like a drug dealer, pushing the addiction to freedom and lifestyle. Believe me, it's not a hard sale. Most people are so beat down by the toil that they are quick to embrace the concept of big money and free time. It's always so wonderful to celebrate another stay-at-home-entrepreneur into our ranks.
When you transition into it for the first time it's a little lonely. You dream about being free to go golfing every day, and yet all your buddies are at work. That's when it clicks. You're supposed to help your friends get free as well.
My friend David Pynn lives about 10 minutes away from me. He used to work full time at an insurance brokerage. Today, he has a fulltime coaching practice, where he helps entrepreneurs to grow their own businesses. He also owns a couple of leveraged, residual income streams. And he's developing into a wizard at finding and growing under-utilized assets in any business.... even mine!
A lot of my friends like to come over, go in my office and dig through my files. I am a packrat when it comes to marketing. I collect samples, examples, and file after file of stuff. Pynn was digging through a particularly deep level from last decade and found some gold recently.
Back in the late nineties, I had been stuck at the same pin rank in my MLM Company for over 2 years. I was frustrated, and needed to shake things up. I created a unique modular training system for my team that got everyone on the same page for the first time in years. It was called "The Unified System". The bottom line is this: within 7 months of implementing it, I reached the top income level in the company. I was the #6 earner in the entire company and had added several thousand members to my team. Things just exploded!
As with most good things, it got shelved as new things rolled out. But let me tell you, in my 11 years with that company I never saw growth like we did with the Unified System. And Pynn found it again. He went to work on the original to create a generic version for some of his coaching clients. The whiz kid created a proprietary conference call training system to help leaders integrate the training into their own respective organizations. I was impressed to say the least.
Here's the lesson. Human nature is always going to try to change when something works. The magic is to know when to change back when something doesn't work.

Top 10 Ways To Fail In Multi-Level Marketing

Today's micro-essay is a really simple one. Instead of telling you how to be a humongous success, I am going to do the OPPOSITE.
This article may be very valuable to you if you have a growing downline. Once you have a hundred or more partners, it seems like they never listen to their upline. In fact the more successful you become as an upline, the LESS people will listen to you!
So think of this as your secret weapon. When a struggling downline member refuses to heed your sage advice, give him this checklist. He'll naturally do....that's right...the OPPOSITE...and he'll find success.
1. Quit
That's right. Why even try? Quitting is easy.
2. Don't talk to anyone
I heard a lot of big mlmers never talked to a single soul. Luck plays a big factor, right?
3. Never do presentations
Don't you have that magic website that signs them up? In the nineties we had magic videos that did all the work. Hard work is for wimps.
4. Never follow up
Follow-up is for suckers. If they aren't smart enough to sign up today from the magic website, who needs them, right?
5. Don't use the company products
I sell vitamins, I don't actually TAKE vitamins. Those things give you weird side effects like more energy... who needs that?
6. Have a lousy attitude
Shut up and sell something! Does it smell funny in here?
7. Complain to anyone that will listen
Listen, it's not fair. I got in late and all the good prospects were already taken. Maybe if we start our own deal we can be at the top?
8. Try to fix the company mistakes
Hello, President? Listen, I can help. Your company plan sucks, you have too much Vitamin K in your product, and frankly, your hair style is way out of date. Grab a pen, I'm just getting started.
9. Juggle multiple programs
What day is it? Monday I do VOIP, Tuesday is Jungle Juice, Wednesday is for my gold coin deal, Thursday is for my ephedra-free diet jellybeans, and Friday is date night. Weekends are for my offshore buyers club. So what looks good to you?
10. Love them and leave them
Here's your kit, good luck. Law of the jungle you know? Survival of the fittest. Why would I help you if I can go get a new sucker, er, I mean prospect.
WARNING! Adherence to any of the 10 points can cause Disappearing Downline Disease. Side effects include small or non-existent bonus checks, staring at the wall for long periods of time, and hours and hours of surfing the Internet without achieving anything!
You can do this. I believe in you!

Is it Urgent or Important?

When it comes to building big downlines, one of the most common excuses I hear from people is "I don't have the time!"
When I sit down to coach them, I find a shocking statistic....they have the exact same 168 hours in the week that top earners have
One of the secrets to productivity is scheduling your time, and then protecting it fanatically. In scheduling that time, please, please, please differentiate between URGENT and IMPORTANT tasks.
For example, right now take a deep breath and hold it. In about a minute or so, it will become important to exhale and take another breath...but keep holding your breath. Hold it....hold it....hold it...how are you doing so far?
After about a minute and a half, not only will it be important to breathe again, it will become urgent. You can tell the difference by stress levels in your body....feel the burn in your lungs yet?
Keep holding your breath until the end of this article.
When it comes to making calls to prospects, its almost always important, but not urgent. Urgent tasks stress our immune systems, and give us anxiety. Important tasks make us feel accomplished when they are done. Most people who cry, "I don't have any time" are being bogged down by the urgent, instead of living in the important.
Is it important or urgent to tell your spouse and kids that you love them?
How are your lungs? Is it urgent or important to breathe again?

Balancing The Wheel Of Life

Have you ever done the "Wheel of Life Exercise"? It's a favorite staple of the coaching industry. You take a blank piece of paper, and draw a large round clock on a page. You know, big circle, center point, arms from the center point to the outer circle like the numbers on a clock.
It almost looks like a big apple and rhubarb pie sliced into 12 pieces.
How did you do? I got a 'B' in art class. I hope you followed my wonky directions!
Each slice of the pie represents a key area of your life. I have my coaching clients label each piece with titles meaningful to them. Popular examples are "health, wealth, recreation, family, relationships, spirituality, charity, education, career, etc." Try this for yourself.
Now imaging that the center of the pie represents ZERO, and the outer edge of the circle represents that area of your life as a perfect TEN. You then rate each area of your life based upon your current satisfaction level with that area. For example, maybe your relationships are a 6, your health is a 7, your income is a 4, your career is a 5, your spirituality is a 8, etc. Make a little mark on each slice to represent the score for each area.
Then join each mark together to get a weird blobby shaped Wheel of Life.
I may never have met you, but I'm pretty sure that you didn't score yourself a perfect TEN in each key life area. If you did, then send $10,000 to your favorite 5 charities....good for you. In 15 years of doing this I have yet to meet a perfect TEN in each area!
Obviously a Wheel Of Life that is out of balance will crash at any speed above a slow crawl. That's why often our lives seem so crazy the minute we start moving in any direction quickly. It's like the proverbial shopping cart at the grocery store...one bad wheel causes accidents!
Many of us are acutely aware that our lives are out of balance. The big question is, "What do I do about it?"
That's where Strategic Thinking plays an important role. It is critical that you take time each and everyday to do nothing but just think. Here's what I do.
I get up at 7 am every morning Monday to Friday. I put on jeans, a sweatshirt and an old baseball cap to cover my bed head. I pop on the headphones with some relaxing instrumental music on my CD and start walking. I walk 30 minutes away from my house, then turn around and walk back. That's my hour walk each morning.
On the walk I focus on my breathing for 5 minutes, just quietly waking into the day. I then do 3 minutes of listing everything that I am grateful for. Then I visualize my day, week, month and year for about 7 minutes. By then I have been walking 15 minutes, I am wide awake, energized, and then I focus the next 45 minutes on Strategic Thinking.
This has worked wonders for me! I have created business plans, new products, goals, trips, and had amazing creative ideas on these walks. One of the patterns that I have begun to do is to break Key Life Areas into Areas of Improvement. I'll give you an example, Health.
For years I had no definitive strategy when it came to my Health. I ate relatively well, exercise occasionally, kept my waistline under 32, and was managing fairly well with stress. With no focused goal for my health, it pretty much coasted along. Once I started Strategic Thinking, everything changed.
I first broke Health into sub-categories so I could focus my improvement. I now work on Flexibility, Strength, Cardio, Diet, and Stress Management. I found books related to each sub-category, and began to self-educate. I sought out the best experts in each field to learn their strategies. Within weeks I was making significant progress in each area. With an actual goal to shoot for my energy levels, flexibility and strength and body fat levels have all improved.
So here's my challenge to you. Take a minimum of 30 minutes each day at least 5 days a week just for yourself for the next 21 days. Give yourself the gift of personal quiet time so you can practice Strategic Thinking on all of the important areas of your life. Separate yourself from the masses that live from crisis to crisis in reaction mode from dawn 'til dusk. Watch the amazing changes unfold in your life!

A Few Thoughts On Ambition

I found a great little quote today in a magazine called Good Stuff. It's attributed to Charles Baudouin, and does a great job explaining ambition.
"To be ambitious for wealth, and yet always expecting to be poor; to be always doubting your ability to get what you long for, is like trying to reach east by traveling west. There is no philosophy which will help a man to succeed when he is always doubting his ability to do so, and thus attracting failure. No matter how hard you work for success, if your thought is saturated with the fear of failure, it will kill your efforts, neutralize your endeavors and make success impossible."
I had to read the quote out loud three times to make sure I fully got its meaning. It really is at the core of everything I have been learning and teaching and doing for the last 15 years. It does a great job of answering the mysterious question, "Why are some people more successful than others?"
Napolean Hill's Think & Grow Rich talked about it. Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz analyzed it. Personal Coaching for Results by Lou Tice danced around it. Mach II With Your Hair On Fire by Richard Brooke explored it. But was is "IT" really?
Imagine the scenario in an MLM company. A heavy-hitter personally recruits 100 people frontline to him in 2 years. How did he (or she) do it? Not just the "what-did-he-say?" or "what-ads-did-he-run?" or "what-autoresponder-did-he-use?" meaningless stuff. But more importantly, "What pictures did he hold in his mind?" "What did he say to himself?" "What belief systems did he have?"
Now let's look at the frontline 100. Chances are 80 of them will quit within 12 months. Fifteen remaining will struggle, while just 5 will have some semblance of success. Why? They all started with the same opportunity. What made the difference?
This partially addresses the downline building style of many serious builders. They tell their teams, "Go wide fast!" Why? Because they usually have no idea who will build the business, nor any idea how to build leaders that stick!

For example, one of my tasks today was to write an article on time management. It was #2 on my list, and I know my creativity is highest before 10 am. I blocked off 45 minutes, and referenced an article in one of my files that I keep on interesting subjects to write about.

5. Strive For Results
Now that you've written it down, DO IT! Will there be interruptions? Possibly. But since you've planned 4-5 hours worth of work in the day, you've got some slack in the line.
The main thing when interrupted is after you deal with the crisis, GET BACK TO THE SCHEDULE.

6. Eliminate Clutter
Ask yourself repeatedly, "Will it hurt me to throw this away?"
The average person has too much clutter in their lives. They waste over 70 hours per year looking for missing staplers, three hole punches, printer paper, etc.
Over 80% of emails filed will never be looked at again. Over 80% of paper in filing cabinets will never be seen again.

A Few Thoughts About Retired People

A very old grandmother lived with her daughter and grandson.
As she grew frail and feeble, instead of being a help around the house, she became a constant liability. She broke plates and cups, lost knives and spilled her tea. One day, exasperated because the old woman had broken another expensive plate, the daughter sent the grandson to buy his grandmother a plastic plate.
The boy hesitated because he knew a plastic plate would humiliate his poor old grandmother. But his mother insisted, so off he went. He returned, bringing not one, but two plastic plates.
"I asked you to buy one, " his mother said. "Didn't you hear me?"
"Yes," said the boy. "But I bought the second one so there would be one for you when you get old and come live with me."
Aging. We can't stop it. And it's becoming the single most powerful socio-economic force in the North American economy. Not only will you and I eventually face it personally, we will face it daily in our businesses.
I've just returned from spending a week with my folks in Laughlin Nevada. They are both retired, and spend the freezing cold Canadian winters down south. They have worked all their lives to accumulate enough wealth to enjoy their "golden years". My father confronts the specter of heart disease, my mother battles cancer and osteo-arthritis.
You can learn a lot from hanging around seniors. Mostly where the bargains are. My father is a retired educator, with a post-doctorate in educational administration. He was more than willing to share his thoughts with me on the graying of America.
My father lumps seniors into two categories. Those with money, and those without. The ones with money have two sub-categories. Those who will spend money in exchange for convenience, and those who are going to their graves clutching their wallets.
He told me that the bank lineups in Laughlin are enormous, and 99% seniors. When I enquired why they don't use bank machines, I was told because a bank machine charges a $2 surcharge. He told me the lineups for gas are unreal, circa the '70's oil crisis. Seniors shop around to save 5 cents a gallon and then lineup. Making their little pile of money last until death is a full time job.
My dad always has made fun of my little MLM ventures. He knows the kind of cash flow I enjoy now, but still he bugs me by shaking his discount bottle of 99 cent vitamins in my face. But he makes his point very loud and clear. "If you want to sell to the bulk of seniors, be prepared to compete on price."
"But, " he continued "A big portion of seniors will gladly give up the bucks if you can save them time. Convenience is a bigger motivator to seniors than price. The price-conscious ones can always wait until next week for the sale. But for old farts like me, I'll gladly pay a premium if you can make my life easier. Being retired is all about simplicity and routine."
Here's my question to you. "If you can't compete on perceived price because your product is of high quality, how can you modify your sales presentation to reflect convenience?"

As America ages, selling on convenience will be a major play for smart marketers. By assembling your reasons now, you can get a head start. Every eight seconds someone turns 50 in America!

Why Am I Talking To This Prospect?

I just got off the phone with Clark, a young eager member of my downline. We were celebrating him enrolling his first downline partner. How exciting! He's been learning to work the cold market while test-marketing his products to his warm market. He's putting out about 1000 drop cards a week, and he's starting to get a steady stream of prospect calls.
I asked him a loaded question to see how he would respond.
"Clark, what's the real purpose of phoning a prospect?" I said.
He thought for a minute. Then he hit me with a profound answer for a rookie.
"My job is to uncover what their needs are and help them to see how this business can solve their problems."
My mouth was slightly agape. I know I sure didn't think that way when I started in the mlm industry back in 1988. I needed to sell product so I could make money to buy food. I needed to recruit them so I could make money to buy food. Funny how an empty stomach was my motivation!
And it's no wonder my numbers stank in the beginning. I was always "telling and selling" instead of "uncovering their need".
Here's a little training tip. Write this phrase on a post-it note and stick it near the phone.

Has anyone ever asked you, 'How hard do I have to work?' when it came to being successful in network marketing? I hear it a lot. I talk to a lot of people. It kind of seems like a strange question, doesn't it?
I once tried to figure it out. You know, do the math behind it. It wasn't easy.

I first figured out how hard someone would have to work if they had a job their whole life. I had them start at age 25, because many people screw around at college or backpack across Europe, or bounce around from lousy job to lousy job and party for a few years. So I planned for 7 years after high school to enjoy the last remnants of youth before they were crushed by the work-a-day world.
Age 25. Welcome to your desk. You'll sit here from 9 am to 5 pm every day from Monday to Friday. You'll take a 10 minute break everyday at 10:15, and again at 3:00. Your lunch break is scheduled from 12:15 to 12:50 everyday. Every second Friday you'll get an envelope with $1750 a week. Only 40 years to go....
A working drone giving 40 hours a week, 50 weeks a year with two weeks off per year for good behavior, for 40 years of his or her life will ultimately give their employer 80,000 HOURS!
80,000 hours of your life. Even at $15 bucks an hour you'll make $1.2 million. At $50 grand a year, that's $2 million in lifetime earnings....
Then why are 95% of seniors unable to write a check for $500 bucks in their 'golden years'?
There are only 3 answers to the question 'How hard do I have to work to be successful in MLM?'.
- I'll try.
- I'll do my best.
- I'll do whatever it takes.
Answers 1 and 2 mean failure, 100% failure in not just MLM, but in life.
Try all you want. Life and MLM are both too hard to just try.
What about trying your best?
- Your best isn't good enough! You aren't born with what it takes to build a huge consumer network filled with people who believe in something.
- Your best isn't good enough. You must get better.
- You must be willing to do what ever it takes.
- You must work harder on yourself, than any other aspect of this business.
What is the alternative?
Give 80,000 of the best hours of your life to an employer. That program has a 95% failure rate.

Are you good at telling jokes?

Are you good at telling jokes?
I'm not. I'm not sure why. I love comedy. I seem to always forget jokes. It's like the part of my brain that stores jokes is shaped like a funnel. The joke goes in, swirls around, and drops out the bottom.
I think someone is either good at telling jokes, or they aren't. Which are you?

I'm pretty good at remembering one liners specific to the network marketing business. I love one liners. They make you think hard when you hear them. They make your prospect think hard too...
Here's one I use at the end of my presentations.
'Mr. Prospect, it's not the speed of your decision, but the accuracy that counts...'
Drop that doozy on them, then look them straight in the eye, then look up in the air as if you're trying to smell something. Nod slightly and scratch your chin.
Why?
I don't know. At least it's a plan. It's better than having no plan! If you don't have an ending planned for your presentation, you'll end up yakking for hours until you run out of material to talk about!
Here's another great quote that you can work into your next training or presentation.
'When you come to a fork in the road, take it!' Yogi Berra, baseball great and one-liner legend.
What the heck does that quote mean?
I believe that when faced with a decision, not to decide is a decision....
Woops. Another great one-liner.
One of the reasons people never seem to get anything going in their mlm business is they can never seem to come to a decision. The decide to join. Then they want to think about it. Then they decide to get busy building. Then they stop to think again. They commit to coming to events, then they don't show.
I swear that some 40-year-olds are worse than children....
If more people would look at their mlm business, come to a basic decision to JUST DO IT, then not question that decision for a period of 2 years, they would be light years ahead.
Doubt creeps into the minds of men like a spider in the attic...

Never Take Your Eyes Off The Horizon

There is something life-altering about leaping from a perfectly good airplane with 12 lbs. of silk and string tied to your back while flying at 10,000 feet.
Like many other enthusiastic hobbyists, I fondly recall my first experience with skydiving. It was about ten years ago when I was in the Northwest Territories in Canada. I went through the standard lecturers and trainings from experienced teachers, but nothing can prepare you for the initial terror of crawling out on the wheel of a tiny airplane about the size of a Mercedes.
The first blast of air that hits you at 120 miles an hour wakes you up to the reality that you are two miles above the Earth, preparing to jump. You take a deep breath, hang from the wing strut, smile nervously at your teacher, and release your grasp.
The first moments of anything new can be unsettling, and leaping from 10,000 feet is no exception. You feel the sensation of weightlessness as you remember to do as you were instructed. 'Arch! Arch!' You silently scream to yourself as a dizzying, spinning blur comes into view.
Your senses begin to realize that the twirling blue line is where the ground and sky meet. You recall your instructor's words, 'Never take your eyes off the horizon.' As you crane your neck to stay focused on one spot the world stops spinning out of control. You stabilize and begin to enjoy the momentum of free fall, plummeting earthward at over 100 miles an hour.
Believe it or not, it takes a full 45 seconds to free-fall a vertical mile. After the chaotic first few seconds, you have what seem like a lifetime to ponder, internalize and enjoy life before your altimeter reminds you to throw your pilot chute.
While screaming down at 100 miles an hour you calmly reach down to your belt, grab a 2 foot square of silk and toss it into the air with the hopes that the drag caused by the pilot pulls your larger, life-saving chute open.
You count silently to 5 and feel the welcome tug as your chute fills with air and you peacefully glide down to earth!
Building your networking business is a lot like skydiving for the first time. People tell you how to do it, you read about it, you watch others do it, but there is still incredible apprehension in attempting it for the first time. Family and friends try to tell you you're crazy. 'What if you fail?', they cry. The last seconds before you take the plunge are filled with self-doubts. 'What if I really do screw-up?'
You finally work up the courage to leap, only to find your world spinning out of control moments later in unfamiliar surroundings. Panic sets in, and unless you take control of your situation you'll quickly give up, merely another statistic of failed networkers.
What is the solution?
Focus your entire being on your desired outcome and ignore the distractions. Pick that one spot on the horizon that represents your goals, dreams and aspirations and stay focused no matter what.
Watch as the annoying, spinning distractions drop away and life comes under your control once again. Feel yourself and your business accelerate towards breathtaking momentum. Notice the onlookers on the ground cheering you on.
Enjoy the excitement!
Continue the ride until your trusty altimeter tells you it's time to prepare for a soft landing.

Saturation Is A Myth That Is Costing You A Fortune

I had a unique experience recently that opened my eyes to the vast potential of this incredible industry. Forget any misplaced idea that mlm is saturated. You and I haven't even begun to scratch the surface of our immense industry!
I flew into Salt Lake City Utah for 3 days of consulting. The SLC airport is quiet and small, and I made excellent time out to the front curb where the taxi and limo stands were. I waved to the first cabby, and started loading my suit bag into his trunk. From somewhere behind me I heard an annoyed 'Hey, that's my cab'.
In a 'Seinfield-esque' New Yorker fashion I whirled like a dervish to face my accuser. I instantly adopted a combat-ready stance, the sneer on my face clearly communicating my readiness to argue my defense. There stood a gentleman in his late fifties, a salt and pepper beard shielding a weather-beaten visage. His look of concern over the temporary taxi crisis was readily visible.
Rather than stating my opening arguments, a switch clicked somewhere in the subconscious region of my brain, and I was surprised to hear my mouth say, 'I'm heading downtown to the Hotel Monaco. We can share the cab if you'd like.' I was raised not to talk to strangers. This was unusual behavior for me.
My question had the effect of a foam fire extinguisher on a kitchen grease fire. He nodded agreement and said sure. He threw his backpack in the trunk and we screamed off the curb towards the highway like a rattling rocket.
The conversation started almost immediately. He was just back from Las Vegas where he had been rock climbing. Unusually wet February weather forced him to cancel and fly back early. He was a commodities trader, and owned his own trading firm. My brain clicked, 'Player!'
As per usual when you ask someone, 'What do you do for a living?', they eventually ask you the crowd-favorite, 'So what about you?'
I tried my classic one-liners about being a Diversified Income Specialist, and a Multiple Streams of Income Consultant. They fell on blank stares. Eventually I said I bought a multi-level vitamin distributorship 7 years ago for 500 bucks, and today it does 5 million in sales in 12 countries.
That statement lit his fuse! He began to question me about vitamins, franchising, master territories, etc. I soon realized that he had absolutely no idea what multi-level marketing was! I began to recite a laundry list of a dozen MLM companies in Utah. None ran a bell! He had no idea what I was talking about!
At that moment I had a surreal feeling, and began to look around to make sure I wasn't on Candid Camera! Here I was in a cab in Salt Lake City Utah, the most highly dense mlm hotbed, the 'Silicon Valley' of network marketing, and this very successful entrepreneur had never been prospected, ever! A true mlm virgin!
Statistically there are over 175 million adults in North America who have never been involved in MLM. Rather than retreading the 9 million who have, why not focus 10 hours per week on finding fresh, eager people who are searching for additional sources of income? Would that not be a better use of your time?
Oh yes, and by the way, the rock-climbing commodities trader is in the pipeline...

Magic Card

I'm writing this flying at 26,000 feet on a United airlines flight from Chicago to Salt Lake City. I was just watching the work habits of Keith, the flight steward on our flight.
Keith probably could have been a sitcom actor in another life. Friendly and outgoing to the passengers, I observed Keith 'behind the scenes' by accident. Our flight was jammed to capacity, and like most flights now a days, behind schedule. Violent turbulence added to the frustrations of crew and passengers alike. All I knew was I was starving. Where was Keith with my delicious breaded chicken greasewich and peanuts?
Keith served me and the other cattle in my row, and proceeded to collect trays from the lucky ducks in rows 1 through 10 who ate first. As Keith juggled three trays loaded with trash, the plane lurched and Keith dropped one of the trays.
Keith sighed, racked the two remaining trays of rubbish, and stooped to the floor of the serving area. I watched a fit, thirty-something guy with above average looks and great people skills scooping splattered bits of tomato, half eaten greasewiches, and used mayonnaise packets with his hands.
I thought, 'Man, this guy needs network marketing.'
My wife leaned over, and whispered, 'David, that guy really needs an opportunity...'
Have you ever wanted to say something to a wonderful prospect with great potential, but was 'tongue-tied'? What could I say to Keith to open the door to a potential follow-up?
My instant gut reaction was to lean over to him as he wiped up the last spills of coffee and cookie crumbs and say the obvious. 'Man, you must really hate your job!'
My advice? Don't ever say that! Human instinct is to defend one's position, no matter how disappointing. Keith would say the usual, 'It's not so bad.' or the classic, 'It's a living.'
A more advisable idea would be a reverse approach. If you were to say to Keith, 'You sure do a good job. You must love working here!' he might share the realities of his existence. 'I studied at Yale. I hate the hours...I hate cleaning up after those pigs...The pay is lousy...etc.'
Keith takes you, a total stranger into his confidence because of his instinctual need to correct your observation about his existence.
What do you do next?
You say, 'Keith, are you on the Internet at home?'
Regardless of his answer, you give him your Magic Card. You look him in the eye and say, 'I may have a solution to your problem.' It's that simple.
What does the card say?
Everywhere I look today, I see nice people, scared, broke, and overworked. How many people will you see today that could use an opportunity?

Want to throw gasoline on your MLM fire?
Massive Action Equals Massive Results!
Here's a 10-step Massive Action Campaign that will shock your business like taking a dip in a lake in December!
1. Take 10 pieces of blank paper and tape them on the wall of your office. You are going to make 10 prospecting calls a day for 10 days in a row. You will write down each call each day on 1 sheet of paper. What are you going to do with each prospect? Are you going to give them a video, audio, website, fax, or a 1 on 1 presentation? Make a plan and stick to it. Who do you call? Anyone who isn't in your downline yet... You MUST have a Master List!
2. Get 10 downline members on your team to do the exact same thing. Have them commit to calling 10 prospects a day each for 10 straight days. Be available to do 3-way calls with their hottest prospects. You and your team will make 1100 prospect calls in a week and a half!
3. Call or email at least 10 members of your upline and tell them what your team is doing. You are looking for upline leadership to be available for 3-way calls and/or conference calls for your team's most excited prospects.
4. Promote the NEXT EVENT to every prospect that you and your team call. Is it a big training conference call with your upline, a special hotel event, or an in-home training at your place? If there is no next event, YOU MUST CREATE ONE! Tell 1100 people about it in the next 10 days with your team's help. Invite all 1100 people to be there!
5. You and your entire team mail 'Thank You!' notes to every single prospect you talk to during the blitz. Brainstorm how to write these. Make them curiosity pieces. For example,' Dear Joe, great speaking with you last week. Did I mention my amazing new website? Check it out at www....com! - David'. It's like planting 1100 seeds. Which ones will grow into trees that bear fruit? Only time will tell.
6. After the blitz is over, do a group conference call with your 10 warriors. Go through each person's list to see who has prospects still in the 'pipeline' as a MAYBE. Plan aggressive follow-ups with the MAYBE's in the form of 3-ways calls, upline 3-ways, and get them more information to become either a YES or a LATER.
7. Make a list of every new distributor who joined your team during the blitz. Send them a personal 'Welcome-To-The-Team' letter and introduce yourself and promote the next special event to them.
8. Call each person in your downline who sponsored someone during the blitz. Congratulate them for a job well done, and make sure their new distributor gets started properly with a solid Getting Started Training.
9. Write up a short 100-word article about what your team did and talk about the most positive aspects of the results. Send a copy to your 10 upline leaders, and a copy to your parent MLM company. See if their Publications Department will do a write-up of your team for the next company magazine!
10. Do it the entire blitz again with a new group of 10 people in about 60 days. Get your downline leaders to do a blitz the exact same way at the exact same time. You will have thousands of prospects contacted and massive growth in your business!
You can do this! Block out all distractions for just 2 weeks and take Massive Action. This blitz may attract the leader that earns you a residual income for the rest of your life.

How Reading A Book Nearly Ended My MLM Career

Can I ask you a question about your MLM business?
If you sponsored me today, how would you teach me what books to read in order to increase my chances of success?
They say that, 'Leaders are readers.'
You're a reader, aren't you?
But is your downline?
I was first sponsored into the Network Marketing industry in February 1987. My upline was a wonderful lady. She told me to 'read good books' in order to become good at multi-level marketing.
I was 19 years old, and green as grass. I was literally 6 months off of the farm from rural Manitoba, and going to school in the Big City. 'Good books' to me were my $80 Calculus textbook and $60 Physics textbook.
I really, really wanted to make money in MLM. My sponsor didn't tell me what qualified as a 'good book', so I went to the local bookstore at the mall. I asked the clerk for a 'really good book'.
He said, 'Oh, you want the Bestseller's. They're on that wall over there.'
I'm 19, and green as grass... I look at this huge wall of books. One of them is a thick paperback called 'The Shining' by some guy named Stephen King.
'This looks pretty good.' I thought. I bought it with quarters. I was so broke.
That book was the scariest darn thing I had ever read in my life! I sat up until 3:00 a.m. with that book in my tiny dorm room, every light on and the lock bolted! I had nightmares for 2 days after that!
'How the heck is this supposed to help me recruit people?' I thought.
It obviously didn't. I quit, a total failure at MLM within 6 months....
I would spare you the pain. In 1997 I created a 1-page sheet for my new people. I found if I could just get them reading the right books and listening to the right tapes, it completely changed their chances of succeeding in the MLM industry.
The 1-page sheet was a recommended 1st Year Curriculum with all the books, audios and videos that I wanted every new distributor on my team to absorb as fast as possible. I put the product codes and order numbers next to each item like a checklist. Every teammate got the same list.
I found that if someone went through the entire list, they were changed for life. They became passionate about self-improvement and Life Long Learning.
Leaders are readers. If your downline isn't reading, perhaps you can help them by pointing them in the right direction with a Recommended List.

Are You a One, Two or Three? What do I mean by that?
Actually, you're a One, or you wouldn't be reading this. But what about your prospects, and what about your baby downlines' prospects? Please let me explain....
Have you ever stood in front of a room full of people and given a Business Opportunity Presentation for your network marketing business?
The very thought of speaking in public makes many people numb with fear. I was like that too in the beginning. Now, 15 years of MLM later, I love it!
Having a good closing statement at the end of your meeting can make all the difference in the world. I have given literally hundreds and hundreds of presentations over the years, from living rooms with 5 people to giant halls with thousands of people. I generally close the same way each time, with a specific purpose.
Sort the prospects into 3 categories.
Give them a 'Call To Action'
Here's the language I use. 'Ladies and Gentlemen, if you do not have a financial plan in place, and working well to get you where you want to go, you saw a great plan here this evening. Turn to the person who invited you, tell them if you are a 1, a 2, or a 3, and find out how you can get started together on the path towards financial freedom. Good night!'
And with that, the person in charge of the room hits the music, and all my distributors turn to their guests. If it has been a successful meeting, all you can hear is buzzing and people saying a number. What do the numbers represent? Earlier in the meeting I would explain the categories.
1) You still have a dream that's unfulfilled. The thought of working for yourself and adding a second stream of income to your family is appealing.
2) The products look interesting. You want the very best for people you love and care about.
3) Thanks but no thanks. I can't see anything here for myself and the people I care about. Thanks for coming out.
What is our goal? Sort, sift and select. Never argue, debate or struggle. Are you a 1, 2, or 3? Let them tell you. If they are a 3, thank them and send them on their way. Ask permission to follow-up in 3-6 months to see if anything changes. If they're a 2, give them a product literature package, and make an appointment to follow-up.
If they're a 1, smile, shake their hand and say, 'Welcome aboard! I was a 1 too.' Get them into a Fast Start Training and take the assumptive attitude that they are in. Meet them at their needs, and help them to get started properly.
Professional network marketing is never about convincing. It is about showing people a way to add an additional stream of leveraged income to their lives with a very small investment, very low overhead, and very flexible hours. Your role as a professional when doing a meeting for your organization is to assist them in sorting their prospects into 3 categories. Having a planned closing statement will help you to accomplish that.

Does your downline ever ask you, 'Who Makes The Most Money In MLM?'

I get asked that by rookie network marketers all the time. They want names, companies, and documentation. And although it is tempting to give them a laundry list of 7-figure earners, I have found a much more productive answer.
When asked, 'Who makes the most money in MLM?' I answer their question with a question.
'Do you mean in dollars or PSU's?'
And naturally, the rookie gets a quizzical look on their face and asks the expected question, 'What's a PSU?'
I smile, and say, 'The top network marketers in the world are the best at solving other people's problems. Rather than getting paid once with a dollar, a pound, a yen, or a deutschemark, they prefer to earn over and over again in Problem Solving Units...'
You see, if you have a prospect who has problems with their finances, their lack of time freedom, their lack of job security, their lack of recognition, you have a far better earning opportunity than in trying to sell them some wonderful multi-level website, shampoo, vitamin, long-distance, or water filter.
It's easy to sell them some of your product. It takes a far more patient networker to uncover a prospect's problems, and then show them a solution.
The highest paid networkers in the world are simply the best at finding and solving problems. Far more people in the world have dissatisfaction with money and freedom issues than anything else, even weight loss. Only 52% of North Americans are overweight, but 4 out 5 don't love their job or their income.
Product enthusiasts argue that product has to move. Absolutely. Huge quantities of mlm products move as a by-product of solving people's financial and time freedom problems.
By patiently asking significant questions, problems can be uncovered one by one. Want a good example? Anyone under the age of 45 today will need an income of $50,000 per year or more to retire comfortably in 2025 or later thanks to inflation. One million dollars invested in government treasuries at 6% will give you a $60,000 annual income.
Everyone under the age of 45 today will need one million dollars saved up to retire comfortably. Does your prospect have a solid plan in place and working well to get them there? Can you show them a way to get there a little bit faster?
Do you think the 4 out 5 adults aged 25-55 who are way behind in saving for retirement worry about it? Absolutely!
Do you want to join the ranks of the highest paid networkers in the world? Become extremely proficient in uncovering people's problems and then showing them how your opportunity can help them solve those problems.
Anyone can earn a dollar. But PSU's pay you over, and over, and over again. Solve a problem once, get paid for that solution for years to come!

Here's a million dollar question for you today....
Would you like to see your downline excited, focused and on fire?
Hello?
Is this thing on?
Of course you answered ,'Absolutely!'. Me too!
One of the ways to re-ignite the 'burn' is by hosting a live training event for your team. Human interaction and the group dynamic have been part of network marketing since the 1940's. In today's fast-paced, internet lifestyle it is even more vital to the success of your organization.
The quality, not the quantity, of your team-building events will be the most important factor. Here are a few ideas that I have been using with great success for more than a decade in MLM....
1. What do you call the event?
Be consistent in labeling the event. Think long term, big picture. By giving the event an actual title, communicating the excitement and necessity to attend will be easier. Strategize with your team as to how this event fits into your overall plan. Some examples of local and regional training events that I have organized include:
- New Distributor Workshop
- Nuts And Bolts Training
- Profit Breakthrough Workshop
- Super Saturday Training
2. Have A Flyer For The Event
Have a 1-page flyer for your organization that they can mail, fax and email their team. Remember to include the date, start and finish times, the location with directions, what to bring, who's qualified to attend, the investment, the speakers and training topics. Get the flyer out to the team at least 28 days before the event.
3. Show The Plan, Show The Plan, Show The Plan
Our most successful training events were always on a Saturday morning. We would show the plan from 10 am to 11 am, then do a 1 hour training. Guests were invited to stay after the Business Briefing to check out our training systems. The sponsoring rate was always significantly higher on those days. I believe that if you can get a guest out of bed on a Saturday morning and to see the BIG PICTURE, you have a serious business partner! These events are best used as a second or third look by a qualified prospect.
4. 10-20-30 Your Training
The fastest way to learn your MLM business is to attempt to explain it to your new downline. How can you fill an hour with quality information, especially if you're fairly new yourself? Break the hour into manageable pieces. After your Business Briefing, take a 15 minute break (e.g. 10 - 10:45 am, then start the training at 11:00)
When you come back, do 10 minutes of CALENDARING. Train the new people to utilize their day planner/calendar system. Review the month ahead. As a team schedule all conference calls, Open Business Briefings, trainings, and live events. The whole MLM game is a business of TIME DUPLICATION. This is where you solidify it in the group.
Spend 20 minutes on RECOGNITION. You can create a high performance team by recognizing the desired behaviors of your organization. If you focus on the work, the results will come. We have a benchmark of doing 15 personal presentations in a month. If someone does that for 3-4 months, no matter who they are, they will get results. We recognize people for showing 15 plans, for first checks, for first home meetings, for attending events, for supporting their teams, etc. If you want to build a huge downline, you must master the art of sharing of recognition with your team.
Use the final 30 minutes to train on the BASICS. Keep it simple. Emphasize the steps that they should be doing every day. Focus on plugging into the training systems for your group. Tapes, books, events, etc. Focus on activity. Focus on setting appointments, showing the plan and following up. By emphasizing the work, the results will follow.
5. The Meeting After The Meeting
After every training event I always catch a meal or a coffee with an up and coming leader in my group and their downline. This is your chance to bond, create rapport, dream build and to strengthen the relationships with the key people who will build your residual income.
Encourage your leaders to meet with their up and comers as well. As this group dynamic duplicates, you team will literally take over entire restaurants, each table a micro-nucleus of excited future superstars in your organization.
By planning your events properly, and by emphasizing these 5 key points, your live training events will be a monster success! You will get your people excited, on track, and moving faster towards their goals. Don't wait for someone to train your downline. Take hold of leadership, and ignite the BURN for your organization!

Hey You Look Smart, Can I Ask You A Question?

Good grief, you look famished! Come on in; let me fix you a quick bite. All I have is hotdogs, and my wife is out. Sit down and relax, and I'll microwave you 2 dogs. Mustard and ketchup?
While you're enjoying those Ballpark Franks, let me tell you a quick story about my latest prospecting adventures. I've figured out a way to get 2-3 prospects a day doing almost nothing.
I've been testing two varieties of sizzle cards from the boys over at Growth Pro (http://www.newgrowthpro.com/). One is bright orange, and one is bright green.
I live my daily rock star life, and incorporate a "Killer Question" at every opportunity. This morning before my workout I went to Starbucks for a Solo Espresso. The girl behind the cash register was friendly, and they were slow so no one was waiting. I saw my chance to ask my "Killer Question". I gave her my million dollar smile, and pulled two cards out of my pocket.
"Hey, you look smart. Let me ask you a question. I just got new business cards. Which do you like better, A or B?".
I gave her both samples.
It was fascinating. She clutched both, scanning back and forth. And then she said "B".
"Thanks! Why did you pick B?"
"The word 'tired' jumped out at me."
The headline read "Are You Tired Of Living Paycheck To Paycheck?". It was 11 am and she was already tired of her shift. Very interesting.
I smiled, thanked her, took my espresso, and said, "Keep those cards. They'll bring you good luck."
I do this when I get gas for my Mercedes, when I go look at plasma TVs and new laptops at Best Buy, when I go get a haircut or buy gum, and basically any chance I get.
I find for every 100 cards I put out in this fashion, I get about 8 prospects. I'm really just rolling this out, so I'll let you know when I have more numbers to analyze. The key is to give them a choice. It seems to relax their defenses and put their mind into "do-me-a-favor" mode. You may want to try this at home!
How's that hotdog? Did it take the edge off your hunger pangs? Good.
I've got to go. I want to go check out a new stereo system, and I bet I can ask my "Killer Question" a few times.
